Hip pain explained

The problem with hip pain is that it can trigger a downward spiral. When the pain starts—in order to avoid triggering the pain sensation—the hip joint muscles may “brace” themselves, making the hips more vulnerable to developing a chronic injury.

Some of the more commonly used definitions for chronic hip pain include hip osteoarthritis, trochanteric bursitis and developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Hip pain can often be diagnosed by your physician or physical therapist by carrying out functional tests and discussing your symptoms.

Symptoms of chronic hip conditions include low walking speed, shortened step length and, of course, pain. When patients adjust their walking styles to compensate for pain, it may cause their joints to deteriorate further and can affect the lower back, knee joints and other areas of the body, too.

The symptoms are often worse upon waking up in the morning, after over-activity or when sitting or standing for a long period of time.

Multiple factors can harm the hip joint and surrounding soft tissues. These include wear-and-tear from aging, overuse, excessive flexibility, bad knee alignment, weak muscles and injury.

Risk factors that can increase a person’s chances for developing chronic hip conditions include obesity, genetics, gender (women are more likely to develop OA), overuse of the joint due to work or sports and previous joint trauma.
